I recently experienced a humbling moment that served as a powerful reminder about perspective and gratitude.
After a bout of illness that had kept me from my regular workout routine for a couple of weeks, I finally felt well enough to try a run. The enthusiasm I felt covering the first few blocks quickly waned as I found myself struggling more than usual, my body protesting against the sudden exertion.
Pushing myself up a hill, feeling discouraged and self-critical, I passed an elderly gentleman walking with a cane. His words caught me off guard:
“I wish I could do that.”
In that instant, my perspective shifted dramatically.
Those few words were a raw reminder of the importance of appreciating our abilities, no matter how insignificant they might seem to us. It's easy to take for granted what we can do, forgetting that there are always others who might view our 'struggles' as aspirational.
Moreover, that momentary encounter reinforced the idea that everyone starts as a beginner in any endeavor. The path from novice to expert is a journey we all must undertake, regardless of the skill or activity. It's a humbling thought that can help us be more patient and positive with ourselves and others as we learn and grow.
In remembering the experience, I’m reminded of a quote I once heard: “If you're not smiling, you're doing it wrong.” It's a wonderfully simple sentiment that encourages us to find joy in our efforts, regardless of the outcome. Whether we're riding high or “riding the struggle bus,” maintaining a positive attitude can make all the difference in our experiences and progress.
The next time you find yourself struggling or feeling discouraged, remember that all your efforts, no matter how small they might seem, are significant. Appreciate your abilities, embrace the journey of growth, and don't forget to smile along the way. After all, every expert was once a beginner, and every step forward is an achievement worth celebrating.
"If you're not smiling you're not doing it right. " I'm a tiny bit ashamed to admit how much that blew my mind!
